College Football Wrap-Up Week 5 – Only a Baker's dozen teams remain unbeaten

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

Only 13 among the 120 largest teams remain undefeated after the 5th week of a 16-week season of college football. They are Florida, Texas, Alabama, LSU, Boise State, Cincinnati, TCU, Iowa, Kansas, Auburn, South Florida, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Furthermore, only 7 teams have yet to win a game – Rice New Mexico, Eastern Michigan, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky and Miami (OH). Thus, ironically, the 20 teams still have records perfect – 13 are excellent and 7 are terrible.

Considering that most teams now play 12-game season, surpassed the mark of the third to arrive. Many fans may have thought that Virginia Tech, USC, Ohio State, Brigham Young University, Oklahoma and Mississippi may still undefeated. Not so.

The biggest surprise of the week belonged to the 123rd rank University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners who survived and defeated the Houston Cougars 12, 58-41 in a barn-burner competitive arousal. With the score tied at 17 at halftime, UTEP Houston left too soon won the 2nd half 41-24.

Miners coach Mike Price could only muster 53 yards of total offense in losing 64-7 in the 2nd place in Texas last week on the road, but the result of the humiliation of accumulating 581 yards offensive at home. Donald buckram collected 262 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. UTEP has really found his mojo in the second half, putting 20 points on the board in the 3rd quarter and 21 in the 4th.

High-power offense led by quarterback Houston Case Keenum with 536 yards and 5 assists touchdown, could face UTEP on the scoreboard. The loss was the Cougars' first score after 55, 45 and 29 points in his first 3 wins, but unfortunately this had to happen, because Houston has 11 players on defense, he did not play good defense, averaging 32-point match.

If the Houston coach Kevin Sumlin decides one day to hire a defensive coordinator and hiring a few good defensive players, Houston will become a much bigger player against quality competition.

The biggest surprise second saw 17th place in Miami (FL) to recover from last week loss of 31.7 distance to 6th place at Virginia Tech, returning home to beat Oklahoma, 8 21-20. The Hurricanes led 21-17 after 3 quarters and successfully take the Sooners to a field goal in the final quarter to win.

Unranked Michigan, which looks awful with 3 losses in the last 3 weeks, successfully defended his turf in the general inclination of 22 Michigan 26-20 in overtime. The loss was the first of the Wolverines, who were behind 10-6 at halftime but managed to send the game into overtime at 20-20. The truth Freshman running back Larry Caper Spartans ran 23 yards for at least 2 escape lining the road, marking the winning hit for the State of Michigan.

Who said it's so hard to win victories on the road to have forgotten that most quality teams. Of the 12 qualifying teams play away from home this week, only 3 – Oklahoma, Houston and Michigan – lost while 9 animals. The winners were:

Third row of Alabama beat Kentucky 38-20, 4th ranked LSU needed two touchdowns in the last 2:53 of the game for 18th place quell Georgia 20-13, and 6th place at Virginia Tech has gained rank 97th Duke team 34-26, very impressive victory, while on the road. Giving up 26 points at Duke, is like taking your sister to the prom. Seventh row between southern California have rank destroyed 24 California Bears, 30-3, the Bears seem to bend in each season, and sometimes too soon.

Ninth Ohio State traveled to Indiana and won 33-14. Apparently still play football at Indiana, but Indiana residents, sometimes it's hard to say. Tenth row obtained by Cincinnati and 150th victory (you read right) from Miami, Ohio, 37-13. Another less than impressive performance from a team of highly classified. Fifteenth place Penn State beat Illinois 85th 35-17, at least the Nittany Lions did not play a 1-AA school this week.

Twenty-first range of Mississippi, the most publicized new "good" the team this season, rank 77th since Vanderbilt, 23-7, the score was 23.7 after 3 fourth, both teams decided to walk in the 4th quarter, saving energy for some time later. Twenty-fifth rank Georgia Tech beat Mississippi State 42-31, showing that the 25 best teams can give too points to an opponent and win with very very effective in the defensive side of the ball.

Five other teams coming home wins. It included 11 TCU over 117 Range SMU 39-14 º, 16 º in Oregon more inept, ranking 101st unfortunate state of Washington, 52-6-Oregon led 42-0 at halftime, a quick shower and still won by 46, and 20 BYU won a place most impressive 119th Utah State 35-17 range.

Fifth Boise State has won a victory over the range 34-16 ridiculous 139A, 1-AA University of California at Davis (UC Davis), another part of the Broncos cream puff (Puff some say) calendar. The Iowa Hawkeyes 13, who shot down 5 th Instead of Penn State 21-10 in a game away last week, fears and disappointment just the 125th State of Arkansas, 24-21. The Hawkeye defense, apparently to carry out their Happy Valley tuckered effort, leave Score Arkansas State 14 points the last quarter of it too close. Without a 4th quarter field goals, Iowa, have worked overtime.

Unranked Three teams went 5-0 in his attempt to enter the AP Top 25 Poll. These include Wisconsin on the road, 31-28 of Minnesota, in South Florida on the road or above the 95 Syracuse 34-20, and Auburn over Tennessee 26-22.

Eight other teams followed victory Unranked 4-1. Notre Dame, had to go to overtime at home to return to Washington, 37-30, marking the 3rd straight game as the Irish fighters have won the last 60 seconds. Ireland does not call it luck at all. Idaho, ranked 89, beat visiting Colorado State, ranked 62nd, 31-29. Boston College defeated Florida State 28-21 at home.

Pittsburgh went to Louisville and won 35-10, Central Michigan Chippewas traveled to Buffalo and beat the Bulls rank 127th 20-13; Carolina South won at home in 158th place, a rival to the state 1-AA South Carolina State 38-14, and traveled to Tulsa beat Rice and inept, unfortunate, 27.10 Toll Owls victory. Owls do not eat rice, which are only apparently called the Rice Owls, perhaps are intelligent birds that do not earn much.

Stanford also beat visiting UCLA 24-16 to go 4-1.

Six top 25 teams were idle this week-No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Texas, Oklahoma State No. 12, No. 16 Kansas, No. 23 and No. 24 Missouri Nebraska.
