Hare raising questions about Easter
Have you ever wondered what a bunny that lays eggs has to do with Easter? Do rabbits lay eggs yet? How does the rabbit and the egg theory ever come into being? How did you come Easter? What are their origins? Some questions we will examine today's article.
Rabbits, chickens and colored eggs have to do with the tradition of Easter. Today we know that eggs and bunnies have in common. Why did the chicken eggs is not to color?
Easter was not always a religious holiday, but in reality its roots in pagan traditions and legends. It was not until the year 325 the Council of Nicea declared one religious holiday.
In order to understand the symbols of Easter, we must go back to its beginnings.
According to legend, there was always a spring festival to celebrate the end of winter and early spring. This festival was held in the first full moon after the vernal equinox. A goddess of fertility named Estre was the goddess of offspring and springtime.
Many pagan religions out the festival itself, but with different names for their goddess of fertility. She was known as Ishtar, Astarte (mentioned in the Old Testament) and Eostre. Besides the difference in the names of the similarities suggest the same goddess.
She was the goddess of fertility. It was believed in the Babylonian legend of a giant egg fell from the sky and were incubated for pigeons. So Astarte / Ishtar / Eastre born. The fertility god Baal or Bel was called in the Celtic language.
The egg is a symbol of the god of fertility of the land. The hare is associated with the goddess. Together, we have men and women of God to bring the goddess of fertility of the season.
The egg symbolizes the beginning of life, germination of life. colored eggs are often gave gifts to celebrate the arrival of spring.
It is not surprising to find the hare as a symbol of fertility. The rabbit is night and is actually a bit different from the white tail that we associate with Easter bunnies today.
What is the difference between hares and rabbits? Well, as mentioned hares are nocturnal animals. Hares are born with their skin and eyes open. They are ready to jump immediately. Rabbits, on the other that was born blind and hairless. Should remain with their mother until they are weaned. Running rabbits, hares hop. As seen rabbits more easily than the hare, the rabbit became the symbol of Easter.
Rabbits start breeding between the ages of 3 and 5 months of age. The gestation period is 28 days (lunar cycle) and trash can be from March to September rabbits with an average of four per litter.
Rabbits are prolific breeders, so seeing how they are so easily integrated into Eastre celebration of spring.
Legend Eastre had a nice big bird. One day she magically transformed into a hare, and that is why is filled nest and eggs.
Easter holiday was first mentioned in Germany in the 1500s.
The eggs, as mentioned above, were a symbol of rebirth. Were given to celebrate the arrival of spring. The egg represents fertility, purity and rebirth.
Eggs are thought to a man more virile. We can see why the eggs would be a cornerstone of the festival of fertility.
There is an old legend that can hold an egg in its end during the vernal equinox. This apparently has to do with the strength of the sun on this particular day. It was proved that this is not the case. You can stand an egg in the head every day of the year. This is not the power of the sun, but the ability the standing figure of the egg that has merit.
It is also interesting to note that the eggs have been used to cure the evil eye. "The evil eye is a curse that was believed to dry up all living things. It is said that the trees wither Traffic dry and lactating animals, etc. The cure is still involved in the use of an egg to remove the curse.
Thus we can see now how we got the Easter bunny and egg color.
One thing to consider is the tradition of eating ham and how Easter Holy Week and met Eastre.
According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, 1987 "Easter" is a popular Easter custom among Europeans and Americans to eat ham Easter, because the pig was considered a symbol of luck in the pre-Christian European culture. "
German tradition held that pigs are symbols good luck. If there was a pig to feed his family considered themselves lucky, because the times were difficult.
(This possibility is probably pork one of the reasons people keep their money in banks.)
According to legend, Nimrod, a descendant of Noah, married his mother and becomes a major king. After his death, his wife / mother stated that he had become a sun god "and should be the name of Baal. He was worshiped as a god of fertility promotion and sexual sin. Ishtar (his wife / mother) was pregnant with her son who was killed by a pig Tammuz. He stated that because his son has been killed by a pig and pork should be consumed on this particular Sunday.
Interestingly, pigs are not eaten by the Jewish faith. It was an abomination of God to eat. Easter is celebrated in the consumption of lamb that symbolizes redemption. Some may say that the ham for Easter dinner is an abomination of Christianity.
The problems have arisen because the festival and Eastre respect for the Christian celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus fell in the same season. Heathens liked the idea Christianity, because it was too solemn a religion. The early church believed that if it borrowed some of the pagan symbols and icons and that part of Christian celebrations would help nations to resort to Christianity more easily. The change was a good way to facilitate the converts from paganism Christianity.
Due to the conclusion Eastre and observance of the Resurrection of Jesus fell at one point years, the Council of Nicea declared that the day will be held in the first full moon after the spring equinox and is called Semana Santa, instead of Eastre.
And that my friends is like Holy Week established.
