During the 1975-76 season, Fitch led the Cavaliers to a 49-33 record with Carr, Smith, Chon, Snyder and newly acquired Nate Thurmond. The Division is the only title to date. As the Cavs made their first appearance in the playoffs, Fitch has been honored with the league's coach of the year.
The Cavs were able to win the series against the Washington Bullets, 4-3. The series is remembered locally as the "Miracle of Richfield." for heroism and many plans last second. However, the Cavaliers lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA playoffs because of injuries, including Jim Chones.
However, in the first round of the playoffs in 1989, the Cavs were paired against the Chicago Bulls. In the fourth game of the best of five series, Cleveland has managed to beat the Bulls 108-105 in overtime at the level of the series at 2-2. Cleveland took advantage of home field.
